Building Health Equity Through Awareness, Advocacy, and Community

This is a time of layered significance — a time to honor freedom, celebrate identity, recognize heritage, and raise awareness around conditions that too often go unseen. At DHJ Services, we believe health equity means paying attention to all of these threads at once, because the communities we serve don’t experience their health in silos. This roundup brings together seven stories from our newsletter: Juneteenth, PRIDE and public health, Alzheimer’s and brain awareness, Caribbean American Heritage, a client spotlight, PTSD awareness, and a wellness and internship update.

Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness

Brain health is an important part of overall health and well-being. Dementia is an umbrella term for conditions that impair memory, thinking, and behavior severely enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form, accounting for 60–80% of dementia cases. According to the Alzheimer's Association, two-thirds of Americans living with Alzheimer's are women, while Black and Hispanic Americans face a higher risk than white Americans. Understanding these disparities highlights the importance of awareness, early support, equitable access to care, and continued efforts to improve brain health across communities.

Women

Nearly 2/3 of U.S. Alzheimer's diagnoses

Black Americans

1.5–2x more likely than white Americans

Hispanic Americans

1.5x more likely than white Americans

Client Spotlight: Elder Love USA

This month we’re proud to highlight our TA Marketplace client Elder Love USA, a nonprofit providing home health care services from shopping and transportation to housekeeping and personal care that help elderly adults age independently across California. Elder Love USA maintains low costs and a two-hour minimum for its services, and works with Medi-Cal to extend free options to eligible clients.

DHJ Services partnered with Elder Love USA to help get them contracted with Managed Care Plans and expand their capacity to provide Community Health Services and reach a more vulnerable population throughout California, and we look forward to watching them continue to grow in their mission.

PTSD Awareness

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic, emotionally distressing, or life-threatening event. Common causes include physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, serious medical illness, natural disasters, war or combat exposure, intimate partner violence, workplace incidents, and terrorist attacks.

PTSD symptoms generally fall into four categories:

Treatment options include cognitive behavioral therapy, peer support groups, medication, and animal-assisted therapy. Individuals and allies are encouraged to raise awareness by joining a PTSD Awareness Virtual Walk, a free, self-paced walk in solidarity with those affected.

Intrusion

Involuntary memories, nightmares, reliving the event

Avoidance

Avoiding reminders or talking about the trauma

Thought & mood changes

Distorted thinking, emotional numbness, social detachment

Arousal & reactivity changes

Irritability, self-destructive behavior, trouble sleeping or concentrating

Seasonal changes can be a natural opportunity to refresh our surroundings and routines. Clearing away clutter can boost mood, reduce stress, and improve focus. Whether it marks a change in season or simply a fresh start, creating a tidy environment can support both a clear space and a clear mind.

Internship Opportunity

DHJ Services is also excited to open an internship opportunity for those passionate about health policy, community, capacity building and vulnerable populations. As a minority woman-owned and operated consulting firm, DHJ Services is 100% virtual and works to advance and empower marginalized communities through clinical expertise, holistic care coordination, and deep community partnerships. We strongly believe every individual deserves access to equitable healthcare, and we’re honored to partner with initiatives that help make that vision real.

You ask, we answer

Straight answers to the questions we hear most about building capacity and equity in healthcare.

Effective healthcare policy can help address disparities, strengthen systems, improve access to services, and support more equitable health outcomes for underserved and vulnerable communities.

Equitable solutioning means developing strategies that reflect the specific needs, circumstances, resources, and barriers faced by vulnerable communities rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

Organizations can improve access by identifying barriers such as cost, transportation, distance, language, availability of providers, and gaps in services, then developing strategies and partnerships to address those barriers.

DHJ Services helps organizations develop practical, equitable solutions, strengthen policies and systems, build partnerships, and improve access to appropriate care for the communities they serve.

DHJ Services helps organizations strengthen capacity, develop practical strategies, build partnerships, and improve systems that support more accessible, responsive, and equitable health outcomes.

Organizations can move from awareness to action by understanding community needs, identifying barriers, strengthening internal capacity, developing collaborative partnerships, and using data to guide measurable improvements.
